may tree cutting sa cebu ngayon: Century-old trees to get axed today; brace for traffic #Cebu The City of #Naga police will close its only major road to traffic from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, while its seven century-old acacia trees will be cut down. Governor Hilario #Davide III announced during a press conference Monday that the seven trees will be cut by the local government unit (LGU), Cebu Provincial Government and the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). The first tree to be cut is in Tinaan, near the Apo Cemex Complex. Garry Cabotaje of the City of Naga Government advised the public to leave home early, saying traffic is expected to build up once the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) starts cutting. Light vehicles can take an alternate route that will pass through the former Balili estate in Barangay Inoboran. But the diversion road cannot accommodate cargo trucks, buses or heavy equipment. Cabotaje said Cebu City-bound vehicles must turn right upon reaching the corner leading to the Inoboran fish port. Southbound light vehicles are advised to take the same alternative route. DPWH has pledged to cut the trees in such a way that these will fall parallel to the sidewalk, as a way to speed up the clearing operations, Cabotaje said. The governor called a meeting with Naga Mayor Valdemar Chiong, San Fernando Mayor Antonio Canoy and Carcar City Mayor Nicepuro Apura to discuss the cutting of the old trees. Davide also said the original agreement among Naga, DPWH, Cebu Province and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) was amended to include the Municipality of San Fernando and Carcar City. The Capitol is ready to provide 700 seedlings to be planted in suitable areas to replace the trees that will be cut down, Davide said. Chiong said he would prefer to plant narra as replacement trees because the name sounds like Naga. Canoy, for his part, suggested that the cutting of the trees be opened to the private sector, so that the job will be faster and at no cost to the government. DENR 7 Executive Director Isabelo Montejo said he will refer Canoy’s proposal to their central office, considering that under the law, the wood from the cut trees will belong to their agency.
