maybe its this fever, or a resurgence of my inner hippy, but today lazing in my sickbed ive been mulling things over. since being here in Utila ive met lots of cash-poor but happy people who just want to make a connection, have fun and help other people. as a self interested economic agent programmed to harvest as much personal wealth as possible to the detriment of pretty much all other life concerns this takes a bit of getting used to, and its taking me a while to acclimatise! but its really made me take a fresh perspective; back home in the UK the trend is toward individual isolation, disconnection (with social media taking the place of real connection) over work, under pay, expense, expense, expense, in money, in time, in relationships, in life. its pretty obvious even just from reading the daily posts on FB that most of us are a bit unhappy most of the time. always chasing the dollars, with nothing to show at the end of the month but increased calcification of the spirit and another 12th of a year ripped of the calendar. its pretty obvious now that first-world society and its economy is not a benign system set up to benefit and support us, its a machine designed for control and engineered to keep us busy and nervous and paranoid. in the words of the great Harry Dean Stanton - it doesnt have to be this way man! people here on Utila are pretty poor, but theyre allot more happy. they have time and leisure, and real social connection, and these are the things that make life life. not a well paid stressful job, a vast mortgage, the inevitable arguments with your spouse over money, and hardly ever seeing your friends and your family. Look, i dont have the big answer, or the definitive route to a better way. but i wonder; do we need all that wealth, all that stress, all that isolation? or is there a better way to live thats actually not that far out of reach if we all want it bad enough?? ok back to the snot rags. hugs all Brave xx
