[muses] A great truth (expressed perfectly by Orna Ross) is If you cant change your mind you cant change anything... yet we are surrounded by people who cant change their minds... so the obvious question is, why not? Partly its because even bigger fools - especially those in the media, home to some very great fools indeed - see it as a sign of weakness and punish it. This is a tragedy for those in the public eye, and indirectly for the rest of us as it virtually eliminates any chance of governments thinking their way out of problems instead of being locked into policies they have supported long after they know theyve failed. But never mind that; why are so many of those not in the public eye so resistant to change? I think its a combination of mental lazyness, arrogance and cowardice - changing their minds would require both effort and the admission (if only to themselves) that their previous ideas were wrong, and a lot of people simply havent got the guts to do this. Well, theyre fools. No good idea ever sprang into life fully-formed. All of them are a result of stepwise refinement using a process of trial and error, as indeed are you... both error and change are inevitable and essential parts of any successful process. You can reduce the severity and frequency of your mistakes and how often you change your mind, but the only way to avoid making them or changing it is to do nothing whatsoever. And that is probably the biggest mistake youll ever make. The universe will take the opportunity for thinking away from you soon enough - dont commit intellectual suicide though mere laziness. It is such a waste.
