my 27 hours in nyc was a blast! very strange seeing rock & roll starting at 4:38 in the afternoon and ending at 8:10 PM, very strange indeed. Phil & Friends, Rumsey Field : Set 1: Jam > Dear Mr. Fantasy > Cassidy, Night Time is the Right Time (1), Blue Sky, Mountains of the Moon, The Shape Im In Set 2: Jam > Jack Straw (2), New Minglewood Blues, Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys > Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) > Hard To Handle > Caution (Do Not Stop On Tracks) > Jam > All Along the Watchtower > Death Dont Have No Mercy, In the Midnight Hour E: Into the Mystic Comment: (1) Ray Charles cover, first time played by Phil & Friends (2) with Scott Law on guitar and vocals Lineup: Phil Lesh Warren Haynes John Scofield John Medeski Ross James Joe Russo Jordan Levine the first set was just brutal, that jam at the beginning was basically 17 minutes of tuning up, it was totally inconsequential, dear mr fantasy was okay then ross james attempted to do cassidy and it was ugly, jackie greene pulled off the weir songs with aplomb back in april, but easily the worst cassidy ever. besides the just okay fdear mr fantasy the entire set was boring, and not only boring, long, too. thats a bad combination. but they ended strong, The Shape Im In Was Great. just a completely different band in set 2, we moved closer and could see warren & john scofield trading leads, playing rythm for one another, sometimes warren would be doing his touchy-feely jerry like playing and there would be scofield tight quick leads around warrent sound, the 2 weir songs to open the set were unexpected, but pulled off very well, minglewood actually really really rocked, the whole 2nd set was great. Into The Mystic, not so great, they gave it their all the 2nd set and there was nothing left in the tank. the one thing i noticed being that close is phil dont look so great, do they even feed this guy? He looks gaunt & very gray, and very thin. he kind of looks like the skeleton in the grateful dead video they did for touch of grey.
