my mother always told me my great great (several more greats) grandmother was 2 years old when she survived the trail of tears as an orphan. dont know how to verify that but its been passed down word of mouth for generations now. most the native americans were gathered and thrown in cages with barely room enough to sleep while the us army continued to gather them up. while in cages and during the winter they were given purposely infected blankets that had been in close contact with small pox victims. this spread small pox rampantly among the natives who had no immunity at all since theyd never encountered it before. small pox and other eurpean diseases killed far more than the us army ever did but that is probably because the small pox happened to get to them first. had the army had the chance im sure they would have killed them...rape, beatings, and all other kinds of abuse were rampant along the trail of tears as they marched on foot rain snow or sun. over 1000 miles later they were dumped on the lands of other western native american peoples to fend for themselves in a place they knew nothing about and had to deal with the inhabitants already there. the atrocities that mankind does upon one another is only possible when people turn a blind eye to it and donty speak up and dont stand up against it and when they allow themselves to think of other races as lesser beings they trick themselves into justifying anything
