my sister asked me for a couple of pictures of my dad from korea, and these are my two favorites. one shows the swagger of youth, and the other shows the man i knew, the man who would have sought out kids to spend time with instead of getting drunk with his buddies. theres one angle of his time in korea i wish i had talked to him about, because it could have led to a life other than the one that produced me, and i had an interesting internal dialogue wishing my dad had been able to fulfill his dream even though that would have meant no me. when he was in korea, he fell in love with a south korean officials daughter, and from what i understand, they loved each other and barring interference, he might have stayed there and married her. but he had signed up with all his buddies from vicksburg, and they were all together, and they were mortified at the possibility that one of their own coud fall for a gook and so they undermined the relationship by spreading lies about my dads character that led to the parents forbidding their daughter to see my dad. she was there when he sailed out of korea and i understand it was a very emotional circumstance. an my dads lifelong buddies were suddenly no longer his buddies and he changed in ways i cant imagine and i always wondered if sometimes when he would sit for hours lost in thought, those were some of the thoughts he had. on one hand im glad things turned out as they did, but if given the chance, im pretty sure id forego my birth if it could have meant his happiness. he had some injuries while in combat, but by far the most severe wounds he incurred came from those who called themselves his friend.
