new album update: i have received a couple of requests asking for an update on the realies new album (ok Chris Ankritt?) . well the recording is going extremely well. the original idea was to get in the studio and record our way through an original list of 16 or so songs as quickly as possible and get the album out sharpish. of course, we never bargained for what has happened. the realies have ended up revisiting some older ideas for songs too and worked on them to produce some fantastic new tunes. the band have also produced brand new songs out of thin air whilst recording songs off the list. on top of those tunes, the songs off the original list of tunes of about 16 songs listed with working titles are turning out belter after belter. i dont want to give too much away and spook the horses, as the results so far are producing, what for me, are tunes as great as anything the band have ever produced. but the original brief has changed because the band are so energised by the quality of the new songs that they want to get the recordings down as best they possibly can. the songs are being produced with input from one of the bands oldest friends and most trusted of sound engineers, pat oshaugnessey and the results have been staggeringly good. other contributers, so far have included ex-realy keyboardist/writer/producer ciaron bell and honoury realy and violinist extraordinaire, kate obrien. before you ask for the working titles, you will have to be patient, i know the band are supersticious about putting the titles out before the recordings are nailed and i dont want to jinx anything. for me there have been some magical moments in the studio that i will never foget... those hair on the back of your neck moments, like martin lappin just producing great riffs and hooks for one particular song on the first attempt, hearing chris demo a beautiful song with just his brother Tonys keyboard accompanying him and some quite extraordinary tom playing from tony mac on another. i can say that the album, so far, sounds fantastic and that the sounds the band are making vary considerably from tune to tune. some songs have production that is very reminiscent of bowie & TRex and one or two are raw sounding kinda like that Never Mind The Bollocks sound -especially on the drums and guitars. there are also a tune or two with that kinda jeff lynne type production where you can hear that 12 string sound....and one quite remarkable song involves little more than piano, bass & strings. the only thing i can say with any certainty is that this will be worth the wait. den
