new question: is it possible to do the same quality of work out of a sense of duty, as you can when you genuinely enjoy what you’re doing and believe it to be important/worthwhile? ——— Hank and Aidan’s side: “you cannot do your best work out of a sense of duty. its not the same quality or quantity of results, not by a long shot… the output is wildly different, night and day… two very different levels. youre not any less capable of reason, but the experience and the results will be dramatically different than when your heart is in it, when theres ‘an entire flood of suggestion, the racing action of excitement, and so on’. theres no such thing as someone achieving the best of their ability by going through the motions; doing the best job possible means having your whole heart in it. if youre not enjoying it, your heart’s not in it, etc, you certainly cannot perform at the same level.” vs Dave and I: “you can choose to put your full effort into something, whether or not you particularly enjoy whatever it is. you can concentrate, do all the same steps, perform to the same level- by sheer will power- without your heart being in it, without enjoying it. your reasoning stays the same, every detail comes down to a choice, and the choices you make are not dependent on how you feel. psychologically theres a huge difference, but that doesnt have to affect what you do. -thats under your control. there is no correlation between amount of enjoyment and quality of the result. other factors influence the end product much more heavily.”
