oday would have been the 73rd birthday of the talented Mama Cass Elliot. Elliot, along with Denny Doherty, John and Michelle Phillips were the members of the very successful folk-rock group The Mamas & the Papas. Cass would occasionally sing at a Greenwich Village nightclub where she worked before joining groups such as The Big 3 and The Mugwumps, the latter of which featured Denny Doherty. When Doherty formed a new band with the Phillips called The New Journeymen, he invited Cass to vacation with them in the Virgin Islands before becoming their fourth member. They would score big hits with songs like Monday, Monday, Creeque Alley, and California Dreamin. They first played The Ed Sullivan Show in December of 1966. The typically stiff and emotionless Sullivan developed an unmistakable fondness for the group. In a 1967 appearance, before they performed in full hippie attire on a surreal living room set that included a bathtub, a fainting couch, and a totem pole, Ed made a seemingly impromptu decision to come over and visit with the band. They invited Ed to sit down with them, at which point they offered him a flower and a string of beads, much to his bemusement. According to Michelle Phillips, Ed was very taken by Cass irreverent, kind nature. We remember the life and music of Mama Cass on this day. youtu.be/DO9pVSBJIS8
