oh no...and then... It seems to me that a lot of the dogs I see are being trained to be too mechanical. Two dogs being equal as far as grit and working ability, one trained to herd and fetch by being commanded, and the other allowed to work on his own, will not be equal in power. The dog waiting on commands from his handier will do just great at trials or some other place where the handler can see the dog on small numbers of cattle. If he has been trained and allowed to work on his own, he will know when to bite and when to just herd. A lot of the work done on a ranch is out of sight of the handier and the dogs must take care of the problems as they happen. The mechanical dog will be confused when not hearing from his handler. If he has been trained to take a lot of flanks when he is on the back side, he will expect you to tell him what to do when he runs into a problem ~~ LR Alexander
