oh yea...I also have been wanting to share something that happened to me at one of the marches I attended last week. While we were marching, a white dude came out of a bar and starting yelling at us. He was saying we were just being emotional, and that the American justice system is super awesome and fair and we should trust in it. I just started cussing him out. And then he yelled at me Thats exactly what I would expect from someone with your brain capacity. Then I started walking towards him with that look on my face my mom sometimes gave me when I was being bad and I got very very close to his face and asked him to tell me exactly what he knew about the Ferguson case that made him feel like the decision was fair. He didnt know anything about the case or the testimonies so I cussed in his face some more and then re-joined the group. This man looked SO shook when I started walking towards him. I have never made a grown person, man or woman, look that way in my entire life. Now, if you know me, you know that my conscience is something HEAVY different, and I started to feel like damn i have more of a responsibility in this movement than just cussing in some dudes face. So Raven and I left the group we were marching with, ran all the way back up the block and into the bar. We had a loud, passionate, 45 minute long conversation with this dude in a bar full of people trying to watch a football game, explaining to him why these young people were out in the streets, why this movement was so important to us, why its important for him to be aware enough to feel emotionally affected by racial injustice in this country. We went back and forth, bartenders called the cops on us, cops came and left, we continued. At the end of the conversation, this dude was still in denial of his ignorance and of the rampant racism at the root of these cases, but there WERE moments, small moments, few and far between moments, of understanding where I could tell he was shook in exactly the right way. The bartenders were shook in the right way. The football watchers were shook in the right way. And I dont think this man had ever heard the sort of truth we were speaking being spoken to him in such a frank manner in his life. That opens a persons perspective, no matter how much they try to deny it. Anyway, this is all to say theres a lot of work to be done, and there are a lot of different ways to do the work. In the words of Steve Jobs, you can poke life, and something WILL come pushing out the other side.
