ok I have more info on bone marrow donation & specifically about me. First I want to thank u all for ur concern & ur willingness to be tested on my behalf. My previous info was correct, only full siblings would be a match & would have been screened to be a possible donor. The next best chance is the national database finding an anonymous donor, which as of 1:00pm today, I am on! The dr said the best thing my family & friends can do is host a bone marrow drive, bc the more ppl in the national database, the better chance I have of finding a donor. All that is involved is a blood test from u. When a potential donor is found, they will have a complete physical, paid for by my ins & then we both will be prepped for transplant. A donor is given a series of 5 shots over 5 days & then their bone marrow is harvested via a blood draw. Thats it! The donor is only off work maybe 2 days. I will be in the hospital at least a month & out of commission for at least a year. bc my blood transfusions r only helping me for about 2wks, I am high priority. I will continue chemo to destroy both my cancerous bone marrow & my immune system so that hopefully my body doesnt reject the donor marrow & if necessary, will get radiation as well
