okay- its taken me close to 8 hours to calm myself down and be able to put into words my rage over something that happened at my daughters soccer game this afternoon. Preface: rory is not exactly the most skilled soccer player- aggression is not her forte. She is not one to charge the ball, and when it comes in her direction, she tends to hesitate before trying to kick it. That being said, shes LOVING playing this season and is having a blast with her teammates (which is kinda the point of u-8 soccer, I would assume.) Anyhow, during the game today, a mother and grandmother of a player on rorys team were being very vocal in their support of their player- which they have been at every game so far. At one point, the ball rolled fairly slowly in front of rory, she hesitated, and when she finally tried to kick it, she kind of kicked behind the ball and missed. At which point, this vocal mother said to the grandmother what is this kid doing- why doesnt she kick the ball? Why is she even out there- its like no one is there.... We cant be sure that she was referring to rory, but it seems HIGHLY probable- based on the timing of her comment, rorys missed kick, and her tendency to be very cautious whenever the ball is near her. We consider her happiness playing soccer as a HUGE win, regardless of *how* she plays. This is the same child who, 2 years ago- during her first attempt at soccer- sobbed hysterically every time she had a game, and would not step one foot onto the field. When she begged to play this fall, we were apprehensive- so her enthusiasm and excitement is just awesome to see. It breaks my heart to hear another PARENT rip her apart because shes not good enough. Did I mention that these kids are 6 and seven years old?
