onlinelibrary.wiley/doi/10.1111/ina.12019/pdf Singapore is having the worst haze situation ever. With the PSI hitting 321 and PM2.5 hitting 246, everyone is feeling the ill effects of cough, sneezing, eye stings and breathlessness. Studies have shown that air pollution is associated with lung caner, heart attacks, asthma, eczema, eye problems etc. What can we do? A recent study in Canada showed that in general, indoor air is much worse than outdoor air because of cigarette smoking. Fortunately, air filters showed that it can significantly improved lung function and lowered blood pressure. So during haze period: 1. Stay indoors as much as possible, and turn on the air-con if you can. The air filters in the air-conditioners are not great but they do filter the larger particles. 2. Avoid physical exercise for now. Exercise requires higher air intake, and so more polluted air in. 3. The N95 mask can decrease the breathing in of dirty air, but it also increases the effort to breath and may not be suitable for people with heart/lung disease or pregnant. 4. Use a HEPA air filter to clean the air. It works almost exactly the same way as a vacuum cleaner. Inspect the filter often. Clean or change the filter once it is dirty.
