our last mission team devotional for the last day: Seeking to Know Our Unity with the Guatemalan People (Thursday Night or Friday Morning) Begin today with the prayer: O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you; bring the nations into your fold; pour out your Spirit upon all flesh; and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. - 2nd Prayer for Mission in the Morning Prayer Service In John’s Revelation he has a vision of heaven. And in heaven John sees peoples from every nation, language and ethnicity standing before God and worshipping the lamb (Rev 5:6-14): Then I saw between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne. When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. They sing a new song: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slaughtered and by your blood you ransomed for God saints from every tribe and language and people and nation; you have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God, and they will reign on earth.” Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!” Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing, “To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!” And the four living creatures said, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped. Our future destiny is to be united in Christ with peoples from all kinds of races and from various times throughout the ages. We are thus one with all humanity. Sometimes it is all too easy for us to gravitate toward people who are like us, people who look like us, like the things that we do and are similar to us. And this is natural. But the reminder today is that God’s grand plan is to unite all the peoples of the earth who are willing to be with Him throughout eternity. Many different peoples will become one in Him. We will be united with the Mayan people, the people of Guatemala and the people from Santa Maria de Jesus again in glory. Their story is our story. Their struggle is our struggle. Their redemption through the cross of Christ is our redemption also. We say goodbye to the family we have come to know this week, but it is not goodbye forever. We will see them again, perhaps on a future visit or together before the throne of the Lamb in heaven. The prayer which is the 2nd collect for Mission in the Morning Prayer Service asks God to bring people everywhere into His fold. May the families we have served this week be brought into that fold, people from Guatemala, from all over the world be brought into that fold. May our humble service, obedient to answer God’s call to serve in small ways, be used by Him to bring people into the fold. As you close today praying again that collect, rejoice that God has invited you to join Him in His work of bringing the people of Santa Maria de Jesus into the fold.
