pg 48 V1 THE MYSTERY OF SILENCE I have caught myself, when in the presence of some really great person, talking instead of listening, I could have bitten my tongue out with shame and it happened not once or twice but thrice and yet I have not bitten my tongue out, I love it too much but I cannot control it. I am struggling to listen, it is difficult but it is a move in the right direction. Pythagoras is known to have imposed silence on his pupils, no questions were to be asked; they were to seek replies from within themselves. Hermits impose silence upon themselves that they may draw nearer to God, in some religious orders silence is enforced, varying according to their different rules, part of the day or special whole days or in some orders absolute silence to the end of the physical life, with very rare intervals. In the animal world it is significant that in illness an animal seeks solitude, he hides away and seeks to die alone, he has my entire sympathy; as a rule we go to the opposite extreme and encourage the same ceaseless chatter when rest and quiet is the only medicine we need. The medicine-man is waking up to the fact that rest is the secret medicine that most need to-day, that relaxation after nerve tension is what all require. We are all going through great changes, our nerves suffer in consequence, the result, strange to say, is increased noise and more incessant chatter.
