poetry Nick Darke My Best Friend Hi, I’d like to introduce you to my new best friend Her name is broken emptiness. We have been inseparable since the night I last saw your face. We go everywhere and do absolutely everything together. Before the sun’s rays can even warm my cheeks she is there beside me to wish me a good morning. And in the lonely dark hours of night before I’m about to close my eyes on the day, she is the last person I see and feel as she wraps her arms around me tight. Even when I’m happy she is there right next to me, prompting me to think of how happy you used to make me feel. And when I’m sad, she holds me tight and whispers into my ear how you used to pick me up when I was feeling low. And when I’m excited, she is the first person to remind me of the butterflies I used to get before seeing you. You may say that this is an unhealthy relationship, and I may tend to agree with you. But I will never let her go, I will hang onto her with all my strength, with a vice like grip until the very last breath escapes my body. Because without her I am not reminded of you every single day, without her I do not see you in everything, without her I do not hear you in every beautiful song. She constantly reminds me that for a brief second in time you were mine, she reminds me that what we had was in fact not a dream but very real, If I cannot have you, I will have the broken emptiness that you left behind until my best friend consumes me and there is nothing left of me.
