posted response to yet another article about our disappearing honeybees... ----- While I dont want to see the honeybees go anywhere, I just wanted to point a few things out. 1. This planet has other pollinators besides honeybees. For example, those flying foxes I keep posting on my timeline are the major pollinators of native trees in Australia. 2. Honeybees are not indigenous to the Americas. Where do you suppose the native people got their food from? Well, they hunted grazers, which dont depend solely on bee-pollinated plants in the first place. As for plant foods, they got those from native bees--and some of those now pollinate the same crops that honeybees do. Theyre also in trouble, and I have all of ONE person on my friends list who ever posts about the necessity of saving them. I dont think most people are aware. 3. Our modern industrial culture has reduced its dietary variety down to four or five main staple crops, all grains except for one (soy), with all other foods as side dishes. The stuff isnt good for us *anyway* in large amounts (Id argue we can do without it entirely), but also, true grains are grasses and *wind* pollinated. Its the broadleaf plants that produce showy flowers that we have to worry about. And simply widening our circle as far as what we consider food as opposed to merely edible would go a long way to ensuring our survival. Which is something we need to do whether or not the bees are in trouble. K. Ima step off my soapbox now...
