preload............. what is preload you ask?? preaload is the angle when putting arm on the door closer during installation so the sweep and latch ranges happen when they should during door closing cycle, so when you connect arm to frame, closer arm is under tension many times the instructions can be confusing, heres the secret, if pinion is SQUARE: arm is set on shaft at 45 degrees in relation to the door (all depends on the installation method, lets say TJ/REG. arm, when closer is at rest, the arm will point towards the hinge, but out at a 45 degree angle if closer is HEX shaft (LCN 4040 for instance) (TJ LCN 4040) same thing, arm should be pointed towards the spring tube of closer, if installing the 4040/4041 as PA mount, before you mount it to the door BE SURE TO CLOSE THE VALVE ON BACK OF CLOSER!!! then mount arm to pinion shaft at 15 degree angle in relation to body of closer(almost directly over spring tube) when installing, the closer will rest its arm on door, when connecting the arm, have a 3/4 of an inch gap (rule of thumb as LCN says) between face of door and the elbow joint of closer arm. this secret may not apply to all brands as some brands the latch range is shorter then others, (smaller preload angle on arm)
