#prostatecancer Three men I spoke to this week each had after consultation with members of their Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) had chosen to have their prostate removed. Each man came to their decision in different ways. Their scans indicated cancer confined to the prostate capsule (gland) and of a grade, defined by biopsy result, that treatment would give them the best chance of a cure. The first man had decided on robotic (DaVinci) removal of his prostate, in his words he wanted the cancer out of his body and he wanted to get back to work and looking after his family in the shortest time possible. The second man was advised that his best option amongst limited options was to have his prostate removed by the DaVinci robot. This man had already had major surgery for cancer of the stomach. Quiet a remarkable man - I met him last week in a café as he tucked into a hearty breakfast. Why remarkable apart from the obvious? He his operation had been carried out 6 days before. An inspiring man who still has a lot of treatment for his stomach cancer but at least in all probability his prostate cancer will give him no more trouble. The third man was told by his surgeon that they wanted him to have open surgery to remove his prostate rather than laparoscopic (5or6 small cuts in the tummy allowing access for instruments and cameras) laparoscopic can be by where the surgeons hands operate the instruments and camera or where a robot is connected and the surgeon sits in a booth away from the patient and controlling the robot. This third man entered hospital this afternoon and will have his operation tomorrow. He will be in hospital for up to a week and his recovery will take several months. He will be catheterised after the operation for up to 2 weeks to allow time for the new connection between urethra and bladder to start to heal . The catheter is a flexible tube inserted into the bladder to allow urine to pass naturally.
