*rant - but one of an archaeo-historical nature I just read an article where Erdogan (president of Turkey) claims that Muslim sailors discovered the Americas and not Columbus. Neither discovered the Americas. The Norse didnt either. You cant discover a place thats already inhabited, you can only visit it (or in the case of the Americas and Australia, conquer it.) Heres the list of actual discoveries: Asia: Discovered by Homo erectus c 1.8 million years ago Europe: Discovered by H. erectus (possibly H. heidelbergensis) c 700,000 years ago Australia: discovered by us H. sapiens spaiens (specifically the hunter/gatherer cultures now known as the Aborignals) c 50,000 North and South America by us (specifically hunter/gatherer cultures who later became incorrectly known as Indians) c 13,000 And finally the only true discovery of land in the historical period (with the exception of small uninhabited islands throughout the various oceans) Antarctica. Whoopdee f*cking doo. A place so cold even Canadians dont want to live there lol Although James Cook is often credited with this discovery in 1774, he was likely more than 150 km away and probably saw one of the various islands surrounding the southern continent. The first confirmed sighting of mainland Antarctica took place between 1819 and 1821 by three different men, a Russian Imperial Navy captain, a captain of the British Royal Navy and an American Sealer. Africa was never discovered. Its simply where were all from....get over it. By Erdogans logic I could make a claim to have discovered Belgium in 2003
