For domestic applicants, applications can be accepted and will be processed up until the start date of your intended entry term. However, most graduate departments do have internal deadlines which are MUCH earlier than this. These deadlines vary from program-to-program and year-by-year, so the Graduate School does not post departmental deadlines. It is your responsibility to contact your intended program directly to determine their internal timeline and deadlines for application review. For a listing of degree program contacts, please visit our listing (by college) at graduate.ua.edu/academics/index.html. It is important to realize that when a department advertises a deadline they are communicating the date when your admissions file should be COMPLETED. The Graduate School encourages domestic applicants to get all of their required materials submitted six weeks prior to departmental deadlines to allow for processing. (For example, if a program offers a December 15 deadline, you should not wait until December 14 to apply; simply having the application submitted the day before does not satisfy deadline requirements for most programs. Students applying to programs with December 15 deadlines should try to have all of their required materials submitted by the beginning of November, and so on for other deadlines throughout the year.) ............................................................................................................................................................... International Applicants International applicants must have all of their required application materials arrive early enough for departments to have time to review the completed file, make an admissions recommendation, and communicate that recommendation back to the Graduate School in time to have the official decision processed by May 1 for fall semester enrollment. In general, international students should seek to have all required documentation submitted no later than six months prior to their intended program’s start date to allow due time for processing and visa approval procedures. ............................................................................................................................................................... Financial Support It is important to remember that most financial aid awards (scholarships, assistantships, and fellowships) are made early in the spring semester. Therefore, it is important to have your file completed as early as possible to be considered for all available awards. ............................................................................................................................................................... Questions Any questions about departmental early deadlines need to be directed to the individual department. If you need any assistance finding who to speak with at the department-level, please contact the Graduate School office at 205/348-5921.
