saturdays nurburgring installment.... awoke with the sun this morning. back at the track by 8 am. what was yesterday, an empty lot at the dunlop corner of the grand prix track, was now a thriving drift paddock. so fun to walk around and meet everyone. apparently, the drift community, no matter the country, is fun, open and welcoming. the LS swap is not very big here, yet. it seems the engine of choice for swapping is the 1jz. nissans have nissan motors, bmws in bmws and so on. they may be larger displacement but the same family. thanks to andy and his skylimit events crew. we were soon into open practice, replete with the familiar sights, sounds and smells of drifting cars. around 11 or so, a representative of the nurburgring stopped by looking for me. he told me i was to accompany him to the big track. (he really said the proper name, but i cant spell it). once there, they introduced me to the lead nurburgring taxi driver, andy (i cant remember his last name), gave me a helmet, and strapped me into todays taxi.....a new astin martin volante, i believe. soon, we were off and a very quick ride around the place known as the green hell. my god, what an experience. i was very proud of myself because i neither peed, puked nor screamed. the carousel turn is everything it seems in film, and then some. so damn much fun. too soon it was over and i found myself back in the office turning in the helmet, chatting with andy and the office personnel. i looked up and my lap was playing on the monitor. when it was over, i asked if there was a way to get a copy of it and the young woman behind the counter handed me a card with my lap on it. i would really like to thank the nurburgring for doing this for me. this is something i will never forget. back at the grand prix circuit. out portion was going strong with open drift practice on the section that has the dunlop turn and michael schumacher s, then turning right for a hairpin that rises about 50 feet in a very short distance. this section is very steep, and connects this section together. they can split the grand prix track two or three ways. practice went on until 6 pm. there was a quick drivers meeting and then we trndled off to the hotel and FOOD. lets see what tomorrow brings. i am really hoping it is sunny weather like we had today. it was beautiful. until tomorrow......
