saw P.S I Love You, or as he calls it, B.S. I Hate You, because he certainly hates this smarmy, cruel, contrived and all-over-the-place sham of a romantic comedy/drama about a woman having to deal with the death of her husband by way of his post-death grieving therapy plan of sending her letters and ordering her to do things. The biggest problem is the husband is not a likable person, to the point where he was glad he died and, worse, you dont feel that there was much there between him and her, making it hard to care about the main set-up, hard to believe shed go along with his orders/letters, or feel that her anguish over him dying isnt only because of a tired chestnut that would constitute a spoiler. Also, the acting is mediocre, despite some very talented people here, the supporting characters are aggravatingly one-note (especially Lisa Kudrow and Harry Connick Jr.) and their big story developments are barely explored or elaborated on, the films tone is offensively schizophrenic, going from heavy drama to gallingly unfunny, cheap and mean attempts at humor in the blink of an eye, the film drags on forever, the storys ridiculously contrived, especially near the end and what would be an admirable and uplifting message of being strong enough to overcome an emotional blow has a kind of reprehensible youre unable to do it yourself without a mans help aura reminiscent of the equally awful would-be romantic comedy/drama/Valentines Day bait, Must Love Dogs (a film that, given its now alone lead woman whos an old movie fan, this ones a lot like). Nellie McKay is kind of interesting as a free-spirited friend and Kathy Bates has one almost acceptable emotional speech, but thats all thats good in this sea of awfulness that you should avoid, even if films like this are your thing (and if they are, see the similar and far better Under The Tuscan Sun instead); 1/2 a star, and hes probably being too nice.
