second paper before sleep.. MUHAMAD AZMI BIN MAKHTAR GB130038 This paper tried to map out the problems concerning the implementation of professional ethics. In this paper I linked ethics to professionalism. An ethical professional is a professional who behaves in a professional manner. A broad and inclusive definition of a profession would be: a profession is a paid and learned occupation that serves a social ideal. Although there may be some controversy on the nature of the professional status of teachers but they are generally seen as professionals. Professional teachers are educators who strive to promote educational values to the best of their abilities. These educational values are tricky 42 because they tend to differ. This paper was written with EI’s educational values in mind. This entailed equality of educational opportunity (which could be endangered by commercialisation) and the well being of society through its contribution to economic, social, and cultural development. These are complementary to the UN Declaration on Human Rights, which emphasises diversity and autonomy. So education should have three main aims: practical preparation, preparation for society and individual development. In order to accomplish these educational aims a professional teacher should be able to work with reasonable autonomy. Intrinsic motivation is an important part of professionalism. With intrinsic motivation, the subject makes internal decisions and with extrinsic motivations the subject is made to comply externally. One could argue on basis of this that giving teaching as a profession more autonomy should make it more professional: the question still remains as to whether or not this is beneficial to education? There is some evidence that this would indirectly benefit education. This autonomy however is not a ‘cure for all ills’ it is just a part of professional education. We should realise that teachers are part of larger structures such as school, community, ethnicity etc. Educators do not live just within the framework of professionalism, they are also members of society and other contexts (religious, political etc). These structures can possible clash with the professionalism of teachers. In discussing internal controls, the esteem teachers are held in is important.
