Process technicians are responsible for establishing correct flow or feed rates to the reactor; ensuring correct temperature, pressures, and level; monitoring and controlling reaction rates (time); ensuring that specified mixing or agitation is occurring; and monitoring and maintaining auxiliary equipment. Reactors combine raw materials with catalyst, gases, pressure, or heat. A catalyst increases or decreases the rate of a chemical reaction without becoming part of the final product. There are five basic types of reactors: stirred tank reactors; converters, or fixed bed reactors; fluidized bed reactors; tubular reactors; and furnaces. Alkylation units take two small molecules and combine them into one large molecule. Exothermic reactions give off heat. Endothermic reactions absorb heat. Replacement reactions can be used to remove undesired products and replace them with desired ones. Neutralization reactions remove hydrogen ions (acid) or hydroxyl ions (base) from a liquid. Combustion reactions are exothermic reactions that require fuel, oxygen, and an ignition source and give off heat and light. In this type of reaction, oxygen reacts with another material so rapidly that fire is created.
