sgi20 A Snapshot of 2014: Selected Issues/Incidents (3/1/15) The nation was saddened by the passing/death of several genuine national icons [including Fr. Arthur Lai Fook; Edwin Pouchet; ANR Robinson ; and Dana Seetahal. (RIP all)]; and was severely traumatized by the botched C-section, and other child-related horrors. Meanwhile, widely-popular ‘feel good’ moments were probably limited to: the Soca Ladies’ glorious run; and the initiative to seek formal canonization of Monsignor Anthony Pantin. Culturally, the grassroots were alarmed by the elitist alternative-mas-route; but would fondly remember Mistah Shak ‘flattening’ Skinner Park with ‘Bois’. On the political front, PP supporters would probably have been delighted with the Prakash victory over Carolyn. The PNM-ites, however, would likely have relished their election victories; and Manning’s public rejection of the OT award. The contentious ‘Run-off’ debate went in favour of the Government. However, there is lingering perception of deceit (re prior consultations); and adulation of Merle Hodge for her defiant stance (not everybody is for sale!). A significant number of citizens might also be appreciative of Senator Roach’s seemingly ‘fed up of allyuh’ contribution. As usual, the ‘crime scene’ was alarming. Many citizens ended the year concerned about the apparent lack of progress and/or visible action re: the staggering homicide rate; the execution-style murders; the LifeSport revelations, the Flying Squad revival; the Cocaine-Surgery; the E-mail enquiries; and, the delay in appointing a permanent CoP (who might be better-placed to VIGOROUSLY investigate high-level allegations). References to ‘avarice’ also featured: some commentators have alluded to an increasing affinity to materialism and greed [drawing their conclusions from developments like the First Citizens’ IPO ‘killing’; the President’s housing-allowance; and the (postponed-under-pressure) Mega-Pensions Bill.] May the Lord graciously guide us, and watch over our children in 2015 and beyond.
