shocking start to the day as i woke and read Harsh Johris post about actor Philip Seymour Hoffmans death due to possible drug overdose... Stating with a small role as the blue blooded but slinky High School student in Al Pacinos scent of a woman Philip worked through the 90s in similar small roles in movies like Patch Adams, magnolia and twister before being noticed as the gay crew member in Boogie nights.....he came in his own in the first decade of the new millennium with movies such as red dragon before getting his first oscar nomination and win for playing the gay writer going through a personal meltdown in Capote... Hoffman was nominated 3 more times for Oscar all in supporting category , for playing the CIA agent in Tom Hanks starrer Charlie Wilsons war, for the priest accused of pedophilia in doubt and finally last year for playing a character inspired by the Scientology founder Ron L Hubbard in The master... a creepy coincidence - In the first 2 of his 4 nominations Hoffman was nominated along side Heath Ledger (Ledger was nominated in 2005 for brokeback mountain and 2008 for The Dark knight) who also met a similarly tragic end.... For someone like me who enjoys movies that are character driven rather than event driven, Philip Seymour Hoffman had the potential to be the next Marlon Brando, the next Dustin Hoffman or the next Sean Penn... some of that potential was realized in the many movies i mentioned above, sadly some of that would now remain forever unrealized... RIP Philip.. and thank you for the years of joy your acting brought to me!!!
