so last night walk about to lock up chooks and check on her majesty in her new paddock, laid a hand on her belly and felt a tiny foot kick...dear God, what a mess I will be when my kids start having babies! early up to get the birds stuffed and in the oven, lots of cooking last night so can noodle about more casually today, maybe try a few more exotic dishes I have been wanting to try now that the mainstays are all done, chocolate pecan pie, gouda grits, pumpkin bars. I can say it was very nice doing all the cooking in the redone kitchen, particularily having the extra foot of counter space to roll out the pie crust (yeah, my family does not, as a rule, eat crust not made from scratch:) Last of the onions from the garden for the stuffing, had a bit of a bad moment when I thought I was out of my homegrown sage and thyme, found enough but was reminded out I really neglected the greenhouse and growing and drying my herbs this year, better get cracking next year. need to run power out there to use a heater in the winter when very cold, wood stove is great for keeping above freezing but a lot of work to get up and re feed over night:) Happy Thanksgiving to all my family and friends out there whether you celebrate or not, and whilst I enjoy the theme of season myself with appropriate recognition for some less than stellar history in the past, the holiday does not have to be about pilgrims or Indians or who did who to whom, bad guys or good guys. It is about getting together with family, friends, community, and loved four legged blessings and cooking an enormous amount of food based on what you like whether it is a traditional turkey or ham, or tofu and brussel sprouts (in the south, mac and cheese a big dish for thanksgiving) and giving thanks to God with all of his names, Budda, the great spirit, whatever, for all you have, and for this amazing country we are all blessed to live in - and if you can either write a check to your favorite charity or helping out in someway the holiday becomes even more special. I have a boss who many consider tough, taciturn, driven, successful....I found out a few years ago each Thanksgiving he volunteers to help prepare and serve food at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen. My parent work tirelessy with their local food pantry. I am humbled by such giving. That is what thanksgiving really is about!
