so today has started badly. on early sheep check/feed our big lad jimmy refused to eat - if this happens we bring them close to home, collect poo sample for vet to check and go through our routine checks etc. he refused to come in, we calmly tried to walk round persuading him with no luck - i was already knackered. stephen went to see to goats whilst i sat in field cuddling sheep and just watching jimmy, being still and close to an animal tells you alot - i know this big lad well as we rescued him as a tiny lamb from our time in scotland and bottle fed him. his ears are droopy, dull eyes, grinding his teeth which is a sure sign of stress and/or pain and holding up a foot. really hoping he is off his food due to a sore foot only as we can treat this quickly and easily.... if we can catch him.... THEN out of the corner of my eye, way down in the bottom field by the beck i could see a big white mass. a very still mass. in the place where we have previously found a dead sheep that we still have no idea as to why/who/what killed him :( i sprinted to find stephen, he sprinted to mass, i sprinted to collect emergency kit just in case, both sprinting (bearing in mind we are very old folk) ... he gets there before me and i see him walking - good sign or bad no hope sign? i scan the area and see no mass? start to wonder if i am mad old lady for sure.. then i spot him bending down and picking up a ruddy duck with the other five walking casually at his feet!! feck. all that sprinting, sweating, worrying for a group of wayward ducks who i have zero idea as to why they have travelled so far from home. now we have to plot and plan how to catch big jim... and that is my morning. :)
