someone asked me why Darth Vader was conflicted between choosing Emperor Palpatine or Luke Skywalker this may sound nerdy and yes I took the time to think about it. but here is what I replied: Vader hates The Emperor and wants to overthrow him but he feels a need to still serve him out of fear. maybe he feels he hasnt learned enough from him and there are secrets Palpatine still hasnt told him? thats why he stops Luke from killing him. he wants something from both of them He wants to rule the galaxy with Luke at his side and he wants the secret to immortality that Palpatine knows. and if he cant have both then what? I think by this time Vader has given up on himself, I think Luke opened up the Anakin side of Vader because he is conflicted even though he denies it and hes feeling for the first time in twenty years and he feels remorse for what hes done. he loves his son he reminds him of Padme but he also hates him for that same reason because Luke is like Padme. so I guess you might say he has conflicted feelings for both Luke and Palpatine he loves and hates them both when he kills Palpatine its not I wont lose my son like I lost my wife I think its more like screw it he knew what it was, it was his moment at redemption so he took it whatever it meant for him death or not. By Return Of The Jedi I think he would actually embrace death at that point
