something to investigate! Norman Eby - Whenever someone claims the Hebrew Scriptures were translated into Greek in the 2nd or 3rd century BC, I know they are quoting Christian propaganda and immediately ignore anything else they may have to say. I do so because a simple search reveals that Josephus tells us in the AD90’s that only the Torah existed in Greek – see below: “I found therefore that the second of the Ptolemies, was a King who was extraordinary diligent in what concerned learning, and the collection of books; that he was also peculiarly ambitious to procure a translation of our law, and of the constitution of our government therein contained, into the Greek tongue. Now Eleazar1 the High Priest, one not inferior to any other of that dignity among us, did not envy the fore-named King the participation of that advantage: which otherwise he would for certain have denied him; but that he knew the custom of our nation was, to hinder nothing of what we esteemed our selves from being communicated to others. Accordingly I thought it became me, both to imitate the generosity of our High Priest, and to suppose there might even now be many lovers of learning like the King. For he did not obtain all our writings at that time; but those who were sent to Alexandria as interpreters, gave him only the books of the law.” (Flavius Josephus of the Antiquities of the Jews – Preface) Another simple search reveals that Origen worked on translating the rest of the Hebrew Scripture into Greek in the late 3rd century. But none of the Septuagint copies survived the Council of Nicea – they were burned and replaced by Constantine’s version, as well as a NT. Here are the problems 1 - the copy of the Septuagint that was done BCE doesn’t exist – we don’t know what it said. 2 - Origen’s copy doesn’t exist - – we don’t know what it said. 3 – We have the Septuagint from the 4th century only and there are up to 400, 000 variants in the texts according to the Christian apologist Josh McDowell 4 – the NT, supposedly written in the 1st century quotes the Prophets and Writings from the Septuagint that didn’t exist until the 3rd or 4th century – how is that possible? But don’t take my word – investigate yourself – be prepared because it will anger you – as Jeremiah said – “we have inherited lies”.
