((sort of a continuation of my previous post)) punching down, - TopicsExpress

((sort of a continuation of my previous post)) punching down, as in using humor to target disadvantaged groups such as the mentally disabled, is not subversive, cool, or revolutionary. good humor, as well as good satire, punches upward, lampooning aspects of society, corporations, the government, and other forces in order to make a change or social statement. that is the purpose of satire, but lately its been appropriated for the purpose of saying whatever you want in a funny voice without taking responsibility for repercussions of that because its just a joke. punching down is not only unfunny, tasteless, and often base--its also a revealing way for a person to showcase their level of ineptitude at gauging the social climate. good humor isnt at the expense of socially disadvantaged groups, and if it sounds mean or cruel, it probably isnt right to say to someone or make about someone.
