Children are now a little safer in our community, thanks to more people doing the right thing when parking near schools. In 2013-14 we issued 1976 fines around schools, bike lanes and bus stops in comparison to 2907 fines issued 5 years ago. This spiked in 2010-11 with 4088 fines being issued. However, there is still room for improvement! We’ll continue to patrol school zones in the hope of encouraging more people to follow the parking safety signage to further improve child safety around our schools. Fines have decreased including shopping centres There’s also been a dramatic drop in the number of general parking fines issued, with a 33% reduction over the past five years. This steady decline has been helped by the recent opening of the O-Bahn carpark at the Modbury Interchange, according to Tea Tree Gully Council CEO John Moyle. “Many of our parking fines are issued at our City’s largest shopping centre, Westfield Tea Tree Plaza, where shoppers previously also had to compete with commuters for parking spaces,” he said. Why we patrol shopping centres Our one full-time and two part-time parking inspectors also patrol four other major shopping centres in our City – all at the request of the centres. Shopping centres parking patrols are a way to give everyone a fair go when it comes to parking, and to ensure disability permit zones are available for those who need them. Where fine revenue goes Fees go towards general Council expenses, such as building roads, footpaths and playgrounds, and providing much-needed community services.
