thanks everyone who came out to my Intro to Urban Chicken Keeping workshops last night. and some notes... Recently I keep being asked about taking care of young birds during the winter or fall. For the longest healthy life of layer birds, it is recommended that they come into lay as the days are getting longer and in warm environments. So if you plan to keep the birds outside, its best if they are hatched in the early spring. This helps with preventing problems of pro-lapsed oviducts and other ailments, and will keep your birds laying and healthy optimally. Birds that are still pullets going into winter should be kept nice and warm all winter, being careful not to induce laying with to many hours of light, or through increasing their protein to calorie ratio to early.
