======the Parson======================== THERE WAS A BOY !!! When I consider how much we have changed over time, I shiver at the thought of the remaining transformations that time has in stock for our lives. A times, in idle foraging I chance upon portraits of my childhood, memories of earlier days and their leisure come flooding my mind once again. At such times I am wont to bemoan the forgotten pleasures of my childhood, though now vague in mine recollections. The zenith of those moments would be the coming of the goose upon my mortal clothing as I remember the days when we played in the rain and basked in the sun. Not as though we had neonatal hyper-bilirubinemia and needed the phototherapy, but the sun was just like a friend and we were glad to wade in the rain. At night the moonlight sets the stage for folk tales. But things have changed a great deal. Over the years time has woven a realisation that no matter how much you are in love with any stage of your life, change, like a task master drives you onto the next level. I have also realised that there is a system that perpetually keeps a man so busy in his rounds with frivolities to notice this drift in time. What is more? Every day we see the end of the story of men but we do not pause to consider how ours is unfolding. Though at times , this realisation comes and on its wake bequeaths on us chills of fear, we are always quick to dissipate such warning which I believe providence every now and again sends to each man. We find it almost unimaginable that one day we shall all become like every other helpless old man like we know them to be (yet even the privilege of age is reserved not for all; the end of the story of a few would be along the way). It remains however a fact that the beauty and strength we pride in today soon will become history and no amount of struggle can forestall this. It is rightly said that an old woman that tries to fight age would at the end of the day make a scarecrow of herself. It is for this reason that the wise man gave a candid advice when he said: “Remember also your Creator (that you are not your own, but his property now) in the days of our youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when you will say (of physical pleasures), “I have no pleasure in them”. Before the sun, and the light, and the moon, and the stars, are darkened (sight is impaired), and the clouds (of depression) return after the rain (of tears); In the day when the keepers of the house (the hands and the arms) shall tremble, and the strong men (the feet and the knees) shall bow themselves, and the grinders (the molar teeth) cease because they are few, and those that look out of the windows (the eyes) shall be darkened. When the doors (the lips) are shut in the street and the sound of the grinding (of the teeth) is low, and one shall rise up at the voice of a bird and the crowing of a cock, and all the daughters of music (the voice and the ear) are brought low; Also when (the old) are afraid of danger from that which is high, and fears are in the way, and the almond-tree (grey hair) blossoms, and the grasshopper (a little thing) is a burden, and desire and appetite fail, because man goes to his everlasting home, and the mourners go about the streets. (Remember your Creator earnestly now) before the silver cord (of life) is snapped apart, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern (and the whole circulatory system of the blood ceases to function)” [Ecc. 12:1-7. Amplified Bible] If we believe these things, then I think the worthwhile thing to do would be to live our lives in a way that would be pleasing to God as dictated in His Word. Then shall the dust (out of which God made man’s body) return to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns unto God who gave it.
