the benefits (in this world and the hereafter) of performing Salah and the punishments of missing Salah. It is reported in Hadith Shareef that the person who performs the five Salah punctually will be granted five honours by Allah Ta’ala: Shortness in livelihood will be removed from him. He is safeguarded from punishment of the grave. He will be given his book of deeds in his right hand. He will cross the bridge (Pul Siraat) like a bolt of lightning (meaning very quickly). He will be granted Paradise without any accounting. The person who is lazy in performing Salah is given fourteen punishments by Allah Ta’ala; five in this world, three at the time of death, three in the grave and three after coming out of the grave. The punishments of this world are as follows: He will have no blessings in his life. The signs of pious people are removed from his face. Allah Ta’ala does not reward him for any deed. His supplications are not raised towards the heavens (they are not accepted). He is given no share of the supplications of pious people. The punishments at the time of death are as follows: He will be disgraced before death. He will die in a state of hunger. He will die thirsty. Even if he is given all the water of the oceans, he will still remain thirsty. The punishments of the grave are: His grave narrows to such an extent that his ribs are crushed into each other. His grave is filled with fire and he spends his days and nights being burnt and marked by the flames. A serpent is appointed to his grave whose name is ‘Saja’a Iqr’a.’ Its eyes are of fire and it has nails made from iron. The length of each nail is the distance a person would walk in one full day. It bites the deceased and says, ‘I am Saja’a Iqr’a.’ Its voice is like thunder and it says that my Lord has ordered me to punish you because you did not perform the morning Salah (Fajr) until after sunrise; you delayed Zuhr so much that it became time for ‘Asr; you did not pray ‘Asr until it became time for Maghrib; you did not perform Maghrib until it was time for ‘Isha and you delayed ‘Isha so much that it became time for Fajr. When he hits the deceased, he is pushed 70 feet deeper into the earth. He will be punished in such a manner until the Day of Judgement. May Allah Ta’ala grant us the correct wisdom and guide us to perform Salah at their allocated and correct times and save us from the punishment of the grave and of the fire, Aameen. The punishments after coming out of the grave on the Day of Judgement are: The accounting will be very strict. Earning the displeasure of Allah Ta’ala. Being thrown into the fire of hell.
