the funeral was today and only had 2 people attend, just the way he would have wanted it. just found out that all three of his friends had served in or in my case, still serving, mike was a world war II vet, but i already knew that and Gene was a vietnam vet. they were both worrying about how they are going to pay for a funeral and thought about asking for donations from the community, but it seemed like no one knew he even existed, plus i cant allow 2 vets asking for donations and because he had no family, we couldnt just hand his body over to the city to be buried in the potters field on hart island in the bronx. so i ended up paying for the funeral. mike and gene offered to help pay, told those two theyve done enough and they shouldnt have to pay for anything. i just wish i could see him one more time and have one last conversation, but itll always be i wish i had one last.... hopefully right now, hes seeing his family, no longer in pain and happy as all can be. i just hope that if we ever meet again, hes still that cynical old guy that can somehow bring smiles to peoples faces. the three of us lost a great friend and the world lost a prized possession, someone who saw the evils that men do, someone who can share stories in hopes of preventing any more genocides and war, a man who had been through hell and back and still stood strong up until he passed away. ive only knew him for a short period of time, but in that time, i learned from him more than i can learn from a book, learned the importance of time. he was the one that showed me in the Torah it says he who attempts to strike down the innocent shall be struck down himself.one day we will meet again and when we do, we are going to do the exact same things we did when he was alive. hes in a better place now, no more pain and most of all hes happy.
