the greatest challenge has been to remember that God forgave and asks us to do the same. eventually the fire of fury nearly ate me up. i had to find another way or not survive. forgiveness does not eliminate the mess but it gives healing a real change. to forgive is not to condone the crime nor is it to forget what happened. it does not mean that i will never be grieved about the past, for sometimes i am. rather forgiveness has meant learning to let go of the one who offended against me. that is the opposite of tying him to me with my anger. it has meant learning to free myself from his misplaced claim upon me, not letting it cling to me forever. it has meant letting him go into the love of God which can deal with healing beyond our strength or reach. in my experience, forgiveness is not an end to grief but a gradual loosening of an awful grip. survival has been by the grace of God. carol grey, anglican sister
