“...the missionary movement of the nineteenth century and a good part of the twentieth was carried on with the historical framework of European and North America imperial expansion. Consciously or unconsciously, missionary action was intermingled with cultural imposition from the West. Though the Bible was given to thousands of new communities, tribes and nations in the mission fields, the way of reading the Bible communicated by the missionaries was heavily conditioned by their own culture. This retarded the possibility of gaining new insights from people of totally different cultures reading the Bible with their own eyes. Even worse, it retarded the possibility of the new churches developing a proclamation of the gospel and pastoral practices geared to their own culture and community.” Samuel Escobar. The New Global Mission. pg134. 2006.
