the other day la Beth Figuls and I were at a reading at the Central LA Library, where they announced a program to supply any child with a meal (no questions asked) since there are so many kids that spend their days there, too poor in material goods but surrounded by the vast riches that only a library can provide. I thought of my impoverished youth, ditching school and saving my pennies to take the bus to go to downtown and spend the day with my quiet friends, and even though my mother somehow scrambled food for us, I usually shared it with the kids that had less than I did but shared their books and stories with me. found myself crying at the announcement and also being flooded with memories that I had put away...
