“…the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. Saul took David that day, and would not let him go home to his father’s house anymore. Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan took off the robe that was on him and gave it to David, with his armor, even to his sword and his bow and his belt.” Many people WANT a friend like Jonathan but only a small minority of the population is actually willing to BE a friend like Jonathan. He willingly laid aside his right to the throne and considered his life, needs, and safety second to David’s. It was Jonathan that sought for and solidified the covenant of friendship between him and David. Jonathan NEVER waited for David to pursue him but was always the one in pursuit. He gave of himself TO David regardless of what he received FROM David. You may never find a “Jonathan” of your own in your lifetime but that does not mean you cannot choose to BE a “Jonathan” to someone else. To live that decision out undoubtedly carries with it major challenges but Jonathan never focused on the challenge. His focus was on the overall health of the relationship and David’s destiny and well-being. Selflessness is an understatement here. Be like Jonathan.
