the struggle goes on. As a promoter of our cultural activities, I must say it is interesting in dealing with our Punta Rock Artist. whenever you talk to somebody about performing at a show somehow they get the Idea that they dont need to help in promoting the show, that is your job. I wonder how they expect to get paid if they dont do their part. maybe they think that showing up to perform is all they need to do. there is only a couple names in Punta Rock that the name alone will sell a few tickets but it still takes a lot of promotion. the artists in reggae ask for a lot of money but their name sell them and they promote themselves with their own websites and their fans know where they will be and they show up. I remember when I had Byron Lee that one year I had people come from San Diego, Arizona and Los Angeles to Lancaster because he promoted himself and posted it on his site. When I had Floetry (she is good look her up) perform at my place I didnt know who she was but the place was packed out once she posted it on her site. Folks we are not there yet. we need all the support we can get. every artist on stage when he looks out on a packed out house thinks that the crowd is there because of him and when there is nobody its because of you. it is not because he have no fans (they think that everybody is their fan). In R & B when the artist are just starting out and dont have a name yet the promoters put a lot of the burden on them to promote them self. they get paid based on the amount of tickets that they can sell. maybe we need to start something like that. then we will see who the real names are. Every artist will tell you boy I mi pack out the place and you know that it was because of the other guy (sometimes) but they all take the credit. Listen you will get call over and over again if your name sells and make promoters money. so make it sell. develop your own data base that you could call upon. invest in a website and promote it. put a calender on there, email your friends, family and fans. let them know where you will be playing at. if you will be playing some where take flyers with you. share your music that others may know who you are. expand your base by reaching other groups. stars work hard to get there, most sacrifice a lot. stop sitting at home waiting for it. stop charging me outrageous prices because you dont know when you will eat again. put your work in and you will eat off your music. be a prosperous artist not a starving one. for many this will fall on deaf ears. a lot of you guys will say yes but will never do anything about it. one or two will pay heed and make a change for the better and to you I say Bravo. Help me promote you and we will both eat.
