@theonlinecitizen: (10 hours before) UPDATE: It has been 6 years since then 19-year old Yong Vui Kong was arrested in Singapore and charged for trafficking in 47.27g of heroin. He was subsequently sentenced to hang on 4 December 2009. His lawyer, M Ravi, took up Vui Kongs case and was successful in applying to the courts for a stay of execution on 2 December, just two days before Vui Kong was scheduled to hang. Thereafter, M Ravi and activists (both local and foreign) launched what would turn out to be a 4-year campaign to save Vui Kong from the gallows. TOC was also part of this effort. In 2012, the Government announced changes to the mandatory death penalty in Spore - changes which now allow death row inmates to avoid being hanged if they meet certain conditions. If the Attorney General finds that they meet these conditions, it will issue a Certificate of Co-operation (CoC) which will enable the inmate to apply to the courts for his death sentence to be set aside and be re-sentenced. On 18 September 2013, the AGC issued Vui Kong the CoC. Vui Kongs re-sentencing will take place tomorrow, 14 Nov, Thursday, at the High Court. The court can only commute his death sentence to life imprisonment and caning. The re-sentencing will mark the end of a long campaign and struggle to save him from the gallows.
