there is a specific conservative discourse about Asian families in the UK that praises them for being close knit and based on respect of elders etc. this is often contrasted with supposed lack of family values amongst the whites and the blacks. This discourse is nothing but imaginary. Asian families are as intimate and intimacy less, as enabling and disabling as any other family. The myth of Asians as having better family values ought to be challenged. let us take the example of those Asian families from where young men are going to join ISIS and fight. All parents claim ignorance. Sons go abroad to fight and parents have no clue about where the sons have gone. Is this what being close knit or respecting elders mean? the least we can do is acknowledge that all of us face various crises of morality and crises of ethics in our lives and rather than coming up with lazy stereotypes, we have to work hard to explore/create better systems
