this got me thinking about an article written by Devdutt Pattanaik. Here are a few lines from that article -- An American CEO thrives on showing his egalitarian nature. He drives his own car and loves to do his own plumbing. In Europe, things are more hierarchical and elitist (what Americans call feudal). This difference has its roots in popular philosophies of the respective lands. Europe was the land of kings and castles and colonizers. America posed a challenge to this by being the worlds first republic - the land of freedom and democracy. Does that mean the european way is wrong and the american way is right? NOOO! Important message here is to acknowledge that Your BELIEFS [stories, symbols- (not necessarily religious) you heard/saw as a child and continue to hear/see around you] determine your BEHAVIOR which in turn determines how you do BUSINESS. In a way this sounds irrational but thats how human mind works. Influences are not always rational because our mind doesnt always work on linear logic. So think twice before taking any action because you are responsible not only for the direct consequences, but also for indirectly setting an example for generations to follow! P.S. I have nothing for/against any culture ( I do agree that some biases might have crept in while expressing my opinions, but then again I am not perfect! :D ). The arguments for right or wrong actions can be rationalized to any depth (e.g. higher pay for butlers), but thats not the point of my post.
