this idea to have a 3D-printer in every home, so that everyone can - TopicsExpress

this idea to have a 3D-printer in every home, so that everyone can print whatever they need on the spot, is stupid. please think about it: how often do you need some new thing that you would print? even today, most people dont buy new things all the time. and many of the things they do buy in todays consumerist planned-obsolescence culture will become unnecessary in an NLRBE. personally, id estimate that i buy about one new thing per month, maybe even less. and now youre gonna tell me that we should put billions of 3D-printers in billions of homes, so that people can print one new thing every few weeks or so? that would be unbelievably inefficient! when it comes to transportation, we talk about using automated car sharing systems, because its highly inefficient when everyone owns a car that just stands around 95% of the time. but putting a 3D-printer, which will be idle 99.9% of the time, in every home, makes sense somehow?? no. what will make sense is to have 3D-printing centers, where people can either go and print their stuff, or where you can send print jobs and then have the product delivered to you via some automated delivery service. of course, once we have actual food replicators, it will make a lot more sense to have them in every home. but not with 3D-printers that just print clothes and tools and things like that. that would be just an idiotic waste of resources (including the raw materials for the 3D-printing that everyone would have to keep) and space.
