this is a clip ive shared before & one i will likely share again because it is Always relevant, but especially in these moments of heightened collective awareness of deep fundamental injustice & inequality. in this clip dr. joy de gruy describes a situation where she is obviously being treated differently than the other white customers in her grocery store, at which point her sister in law who would visibly be considered white in this country steps in to draw attention to the difference in treatment. this is one of my favorite internet videos because it so succinctly shows the flip side to white privilege. rather than get insecure & existential about it, USE IT. step up in the places you know your voice will be heard with more attention & respect to say something that really matters. ive seen a lot of articles going around about things white people can do to show up as allies during this situation in ferguson, which btw is not an anomoly, and hearing the same old lazy rhetoric that awareness of our social differences is divisive. i see this as being no more helpful than being colorblind. being different has never been the issue, how we treat being different is. to ignore the obvious fact that the arrest of another young black male vs that of a white middle class housewife will have vastly different impacts is to ignore the reality that we are all yelling about to being with!!! so step away from the collective delusion & dive into the dissonance because it is AWARE action that will save the day, if we are to be saved at all... https://youtube/watch?v=GTvU7uUgjUI
