this is the third elite level competion ive been to and Im amazed by how low key every thing is. Just a handful of unusually tall (mostly), unusually fit people hanging around a boathouse, unloading singles off their cars. There were no special provisions made for the athletes at the boathouse, there wasnt even a locker room, and only one bathroom available; a minimalist informational meeting (basically just a role call), a few coaches skulking around, and pretty much no parents or spectators... (although I did spot Tobin McGees wife...shes gotta get the superfan award for the weekend). its a huge contrast to the hooplah that goes into pretty much any high school regatta --huge trailer full of boats, parents, siblings, food tents, trailers behind SUVs to bring said food tents, ridiculous coxswains meetings, PA systems, endless emails to/from parents and race organizers, etc also the elite events tend to run on time... as any high school coach knows, that pretty much never happens
