this just in ... NEW YORK (AP) — The National Football League is investigating a report that the New England Patriots bribed the yard line striping crew to make their side of the field shorter than that of their opponent, the Indianapolis Colts, during Sunday’s AFC Championship game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. A source with knowledge of the investigation told ESPN Wednesday that the Patriots’ side of the field was 30 yards shorter than that of the Colts. The allegation first came to light in the ceremony after Sunday’s game - during which the Patriots were handed the Lamar Hunt Trophy as champions of their conference and the Colts were handed their asses - when the Indianapolis team geometer reported noticing the yard markers did not meet the home sideline at precise right angles. “They were slanted inward,” the source told ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter. “Their side of the field was only 70 yards long.” This, coupled with a separate, developing report that the home team also had the clouds seeded to make it rain, has cast a pall over an otherwise gripping AFC title game, in which the combatants appeared evenly matched until shortly after taking the field.
